Stage 1 - 4 Swimming Lessons

To help you choose the best course for your child, below are guidelines for what each course will be working towards in each stage:
Please note the children are expected to be able to achieve the criteria below at the start of the course: If they cannot they will be moved into the stage our swimming instructors deems to be more suited to their ability.

Criteria for acceptance into stage 1
Children must be attending school or starting in Sept 2019 to be eligible to take part in this class

Stage 1 objectives
In Stage 1 of the ASA Learn to Swim Framework your child will develop basic movement skills, water confidence and safety awareness. Swimmers will be able to use aids e.g. arm bands and floats to help complete this stage. In order to pass this stage and move onto the next stage you child will have to be able to demonstrate that they can do the following consistently:

  • To gain water confidence
  • To move around in the water
  • To move into a stretched floating position using  aids
  • To learn how to push and glide
  • To fully submerge

Criteria for acceptance into stage 2
Children must be attending school or starting in Sept 2019 to be eligible to take part in this class.
Children must be confident to put their face in water whilst travelling with or without aids
Ideally they should be able to fully submerge without assistance.

Stage 2 objectives
During Stage 2 swimmers will develop safe entries to the water and will continue to practice floating, travel and rotation in the water.
In order to pass this stage and move onto the next stage you child will have to be able to demonstrate that they can do the following consistently:

  • To travel on their front (putting their face in the water) for 5m with/without aids
  • To travel on their back for 5m with/without aids
  • To successfully push and glide on their front
  • To successfully push and glide on their back
  • To perform rotations from front to back

Criteria for acceptance into stage 3
Children must be attending school or starting in Sept 2019 to be eligible to take part in this class.
Children must be able to travel 5m on their fronts and their backs (without swimming aids) confidently.
Children will be swimming lengths of the pool (14.75m) in this class so the children must be able to stand in the deep end. (1m deep) .

Stage 3 objectives
During Stage 3, your child will work towards being able to swim 10m on their front and back and will be able to swim underwater to collect objects from the bottom of the pool. Rotation skills and water safety knowledge will also be developed.
In order to pass this stage and move onto the next stage you child will have to be able to demonstrate that they can do the following consistently:

  • To travel 10m on the front
  • To travel 10m on the back
  • To successfully push and glide on the front and log roll to back
  • To successfully push and glide on the back and log roll to front
  • To fully submerge and pick up an object

Criteria for acceptance into stage 4
Children must be attending school or starting in Sept 2019 to be eligible to take part in this class.
Children must able to travel the length of the pool on front and back confidently.
Children will be swimming lengths of the pool (14.75m) in this class so the children must be able to stand in the deep end. (1m deep).

Stage 4 objectives
In Stage 4 of the ASA Learn to Swim Framework, swimmers will focus on refining kicking techniques for all four strokes and develop a better understanding of buoyancy.
In order to pass this stage and move onto the next stage you child will have to be able to demonstrate that they can do the following consistently:

  • To confidently swim 10m on front and back
  • To kick 10m front crawl
  • To kick 10m breast stroke
  • To scull for 5m
  • To perform a sequence of changing shapes
